Aufgaben In der Abteilung Entwicklung und Konstruktion werden die unterschiedlichsten Bauteile, hauptsächlich Detektoren und Detektorkomponenten, wie sie in Großexperimenten an Teilchenbeschleunigern zum Einsatz kommen, bis zur Produktionsreife entwickelt und durchkonstruiert. Von hier aus gehen die technischen Unterlagen zur Fertigung des Bauteils in die institutseigenen Werkstätten oder an externe Firmen.

Mixtures of ultracold atoms and cold molecules In this experiment we use a mixture of two different alkali metals: cesium and lithium. This gives us the possbility to form ultracold LiCs dimers. These molecules have an extremely large electric dipole moment which promises many new experiments. For example, the molecules can be orientated in an external electric field.

A dense gas of cold Rydberg atoms Rydberg atoms are atoms in highly excited electronic states. These atoms are very sensitive to external fields and show strong interaction with the environment and with other Rydberg atoms. This gives us a model system that is highly controllable and which is completely governed by interatomic interactions.
